World of Warcarft Rogue Guide
Notes for WotLK Expansion
The Rogue class is a pure damage dealing class it is interesting to see that the damage dealing capabilities of other classes have been upped while those of the rogue have remained unchanged, making the clear leader at the top of the damage dealing charts a thing of yesteryear. The rogue is still the king of DPS, you’ll just have to work that little bit harder and know how to play one properly to reign.
With that said, there are a host of changes for the class. First the poisons system has been over-hauled and you no longer have to be a part-time alchemist and muck around with vials and herbs, you can simply purchase ready made potions from vendors. In addition Vanish no longer requires the flash powder reagent and lock picking and disarm no longer require thieves’ tools.
Crowd control has been improved with Sap making it apply able to a wider range of foes. In addition at level 80 the rogue gets an Area of Effect ability, Fan of Knives, a great benefit in multi mob situations.
WoW Rogue Class Overview
If you happen to roll a rogue, then you will truly enter a world unlike any other in World of Warcraft. The rogue, perhaps with the exception of the druid, is one of discovery, a world of stealth, mystery and great PvE and PvP battles. Stealth alone is something that sets the rogue apart, this one ability changes the way you approach any raid, Arena or Battleground.
The rogue is one of the most popular classes to play for the reasons outlined above, and playing a rogue is one of the most rewarding classes to play as you deal out massive DPS, but you need to be able to play the class right. One of the main points about the rogue is decided well before you even start a the low level of 1, what race of roll should you roll and what benefits does each provide?
Alliance Races
The first alliance race we’ll cover is human. A race made up entirely of either bulky very muscular males or verluptous females, either way, for a rogue neither seem to look the part. You’ll never notice the 10% increase passive racial trait, whereas the Diplomacy is quote a step up, offering another 10% bonus and with Outland being one massive faction it cannot hurt to have it.
Perception is an excellent addition as the increase to stealth detection allows you to become an effective scout in PvP, especially as Arena teams have a rogue 90% of the time. Finally we have an increase to swords and mace skills an extact five points, so can’t hurt.
Night Elves, perhaps the most popular race for rogue, even with the fact this is possesses the worst racial traits, being a free stealth inferior quality and only a 1% increase to dodge. Finally, the ghost speed run, who really wants to be dead anyway, and if you play the rogue right, you should not be needing it.
The only noteable racial trait for Dwarves is stoneform and can be useful in PvP situations
Last, the gnomes, which can be argued to be the greatest alliance PvP race due to the single trait of escape artist, all the problems of other melee classes bundled into one snare breaking ability.
Horde Races
Lets start with trolls, who still have the worst racial traits in the game with regeneration. Beserking is a slight improvement an ability costing energy to improve attack speed, not totally useless, but not fantastic for a rogue either. Beastslaying provides a 5% bonus to all damage when attacking beasts, again not totally useless given the amount of beasts present, and you will need to kill in the game.
Throwing specialization 1% increase to critical chace, not as helpful as it sounds if you use deadly throw more often then you really should.
Orcs however have a larger amount of the good horde racial abilities, namely blood fury and hardness both which serve rogue well. Blood fury is a good talent for improving DPS and hardnesss if the perfect rogue counter giving 15% resistance to stun and knockout effects. This comes in very handy when fighting other rogues.
The Undead are a certain sight on the PvP field with their Will of the Forsaken, racial trait that grants temporary immunity to fear, sleep and charm as well as breaking any already present effects. Good for fighting against Warlocks and Priests.
Cannibalize, just good to rub it in when you kill someone and is a great leveling regeneration talent. Underwater breathing, nothing special for a rogue here, except I guess if you simply just a good snorkle.
The final race to cover on the horde side is Blood Elves, gaining a possibly useful 10 point increase to enchanting, an improvement of five to all resistances, and finally Mana Tap/Arcane Torrent, the real gems.
Arcane Torrent allows you to instantly cast an AoE silence lasting two seconds and affecting all within eight yards, at least that is if it isn’t resisted which is more likely to happen than not, probably about a 3 or 4 out of 10 chance of it working properly.
Strengths:
- Stealth ability allows the rogue to reach more places easily then any other class
- Can create and use poisons to damage and slow enemies
- Very high melee damage potential (The key word here is potential!)
- Can pick locks, you’ll find yourself in demand to open lock boxes etc.
- Very good at escaping battle with sprint, vanshi and blind
Weaknesses:
- No party buffs available
- Restricted to wearing cloth and leather armour
- No healing ability avaliable
Allowed races: Human, Dwarf, Night Elf, Gnome, Orc, Troll, Undead, Blood Elf
Equipment: Cloth, Leather
Weapons: Daggers, Thrown, Swords (with training), Bows (with training), Crossbows (with training), Maces (with training), Fist Weapons (with training), Guns (with training)
